Cockatiel Illness Symptoms If you own a cockatiel, it is good to know some cockatiel illness symptoms, so that you know if your bird is sick or not. Infectious illnesses in cockatiels can normally only be diagnosed by a veterinarian. It is, however, more difficult to diagnose cockatiels than it is to diagnose a larger animal like a dog. Symptoms like having fits, loss of feathers, crusty eyes or vague unwellness, will normally be the result of a deficiency of vitamins and minerals. Good health can normally be restored by broadening the diet and adding commercial vitamin drops to your cockatiel’s water. Cockatiels tend to get diarrhoea rather than constipation. Cockatiel illness symptoms are usually first noticed by looking at the droppings. If your cockatiel seems in good health, then the state of the droppings will normally be irrelevant. If diarrhoea persists and the bird does look ill, then seek help. Birds rarely suffer from complaints that are contagious to humans, but it is best to be safe rather than sorry. There are many remedies (like the one below) and tonics available for cockatiels commercially that you can purchase to increase your cockatiel’s resistance to disease and improve your cockatiel’s health.
