I firmly believe a mirror is one of the best cockatiel toys, as if I look at mine this is the most popular place to sit for them. A mirror is especially important if you only have one cockatiel, as they are social animals, and a mirror is like company for when you are not around.

Some birds become quite obsessed with mirrors and mirrors act as a toy for some birds and it keeps them entertained and stimulated. Cockatiels like to look at themselves in the mirror. I still haven’t figured out if they think it is another bird in there or have worked out that it is in fact a reflection of themselves. Most studies seem to suggest that cockatiels are unable to recognize themselves in a mirror.

My cockatiel dances all over the show when I put him on my dressing table and fold the mirror, as it gives the effect of many birds. Very entertaining to watch.

How do you know whether the mirror is a good thing for your cockatiel? If the bird sings or plays with the mirror then the mirror is good to go. However, if the bird shows signs like fear, aggression, or agitation, then I would remove the mirror as the bird is obviously better off without the mirror.
